ARTHRITIS MANAGEMENT

Arthritis Management

Keeping your pet comfortable, mobile and happy - every step of the way.

Just like us, pets can develop arthritis as they age especially dogs and cats who’ve had previous injuries, joint issues, or simply love to be active. While arthritis is common, it doesn’t mean your pet has to suffer in silence.

At Nowra Veterinary Hospital and Bay & Basin Animal Hospital, we offer a wide range of arthritis treatments and management strategies to help your pet stay pain-free and enjoy life for as long as possible.

WHAT IS ARTHRITIS IN PETS?

Arthritis is inflammation and degeneration of the joints, most often caused by wear and tear over time. It’s more common in older pets, but can also occur in younger animals after injury or surgery.

It’s often subtle to begin with, but with the right management, we can dramatically improve your pet’s comfort, mobility, and quality of life.

SIGNS OF ARTHRITIS IN DOGS AND CATS

Arthritis symptoms can be easy to miss. If your pet is showing any of the following signs, a veterinary check-up is recommended:

  • Stiffness, especially after rest or in cold weather
  • Reluctance to jump, run, or go up stairs
  • Slowing down on walks
  • Licking or chewing at joints
  • Difficulty getting up or lying down
  • Change in behaviour, grumpiness or withdrawal
  • Limping or favouring one leg
  • Muscle loss in the hind legs

If you’re unsure, we’re happy to assess your pet and talk through what’s normal and what may need attention.

ARTHRITIS MANAGEMENT OPTIONS

Arthritis isn’t curable, but it is very manageable. With the right combination of treatments, many pets show real improvement in comfort and activity.

We offer a tailored mix of:

  • Prescription joint diets - to support cartilage and reduce inflammation
  • Oral supplements - such as glucosamine, chondroitin, green-lipped mussel, omega-3s
  • Anti-arthritis injections - a series of injectable medications to support joint health and reduce inflammation
  • Pain relief medications - for moderate to severe discomfort
  • Weight management plans - reducing excess weight makes a huge difference in joint pressure
  • Supportive therapies - such as bedding recommendations, gentle exercise routines, and at-home adaptations

We’ll work with you to create a customised arthritis plan that suits both your pet’s needs and your lifestyle.

WHY EARLY INTERVENTION MATTERS

One of the most common reasons pets come in for arthritis treatment is because owners see the benefit quickly. Pets often show noticeable improvements within weeks of starting injections or diets, which is why these services are among our most frequent and reliable return visits.

The earlier we catch arthritis, the easier it is to manage and the more comfortable your pet will be in the long run.
